Will the child immediately start hearing after the cochlear implant surgery?

Cochlear implant surgery and the hearing by the patient is a process in itself. For understanding the answer one should keep in mind that cochlear implant has two parts- internal and external parts.

Internal part has the electrode array and it is this internal part, which is surgically implanted, an electrode array is placed in the cochlea.

After the surgery there will be bandage on the operated ear. After 8-9 days bandage is removed and suture removal is done. Once the healing has taken place, which is around 10-12 days, then the external part is attached and that is the time when patient hears. This process of attaching and making it on is called “Switch on”.
